Fantasy Adventure Books

Made the mistake of watching the movies first. Then I read JRR Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings and actually wasn’t entirely captivated. What was the big deal? Half the world thinks it’s the most incredible fantasy, blah blah blah. What was I missing? I read it again and whaddaya know – I got it! More than falling in love with the adventure and the characters, I was absorbed in their life journeys. I was there every step of the way, I shared the journey, the pain, the triumph, the heartache. Re-read it, re-re-read it, re-re-re-read it, and so on. Love it!

Extraordinarily captivating characters. This book will take you on a whirlwind adventure through a mythological world and through rifts into alternate mythological worlds.  Vibrantly complex, yet easy to read and entirely captivating. I love this book. I love this series. Raymond E Feist is the magician of fantasy adventure.  

A lot of critics murdered it. People complained about the characters, they whined that the writing was inferior, the plot was mediocre. Yet the Twilight series was a bestseller. A blinding success. Why? I reckon it was because good triumphs over evil. Love defeats impossible circumstances. Someone ordinary reaches impossible heights. Because the characters have all sorts of cool abilities that we’d love to possess. Because a lot of girls still want someone to love them totally and protectively. A lot of girls love a good bad boy. In real life, the “bad boys” are generally total losers. Who really wants a bloke who drinks too much? Or does drugs? Or is a bit violent? No, they fall in love with the idea that the bad boy could still be the bad boy whilst being loving and kind and protective and generally good. Sometimes you have to read a book more than once to really get it. Admittedly I've read some books I will never really "get" even after numerous attempts. I remember the first time I read LOTR. It was ok. Just ok. What was the big deal? I just didn't get why half the world flipped out over these books, or should I say, this book, as it was originally written as one book.  In the end, I read it again and oh how glad I am that I bothered. I got it! In fact, I fell in love with it, even to the point of finding myself reading it out loud to myself with expression and emotion. (There is a difference.) The characters became "real" to me and I couldn't wait to pick up the books every day and immerse myself in their world. So if you don’t get it, read it again.

"What is a Bunyip?" you ask.  If you google "what is a bunyip" this is what you will get: The  bunyip  is a large mythical creature from Australian Aboriginal mythology, said to lurk in swamps, billabongs, creeks, riverbeds, and waterholes. What they neglect to tell you is that bunyips are responsible for so many daily difficulties! Feel like you are being watched? Bunyips! They are quite evasive, you won't see them easily but you will feel their cold chill sending goosebumps down your neck and spine just before their teeth sink into your flesh. Socks disappearing in the washing? The bunyips are hungry, they have a voracious appetite for odd socks (when they can't get odd humans). Phone book missing?
